In 2005, Kirwans launched its Charity of the Year Scheme, whereby all staff are invited to propose a charity to support for the year. Our first Charity of the Year was Barnardo's, followed by Claire House and the NSPCC Safe Place Appeal.
This year Kirwans is delighted to be supporting the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. The Foundation is a Liverpool based national charity, and is the only charity in the UK wholly dedicated to defeating lung cancer. Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death among men and women, causing as many deaths as breast cancer, bowel cancer and leukaemia put together. Despite this, less than 4% of all cancer research funding in the UK is spent on lung cancer research.
The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation was founded in 1990. Since then, they have achieved so much, but there is still a long way to go. They work in a variety of ways to reach their goal of defeating the disease, including unique research into the early detection of lung cancer.
By diagnosing lung cancer early, thousands of lives will be saved.
The Foundation campaigns vigorously to increase:
- research funding,
- awareness of the early signs of lung cancer
- resources for patients and their carers.
The Foundation works towards defeating lung cancer through research, campaigning and education. It provides practical and emotional support for patients and all those affected by lung cancer and provides education to children and young people to help them make informed decisions about smoking and the tobacco industry.

Each year we commit to an ambitious sponsorship target to support our chosen charity. Many of our staff participate in attending or running fund raising sponsorship events to raise money for the charity. This year, we are aiming to raise money through a number of fundraising initiatives including:
- Monthly dress down days and competitions
- Sponsored hikes and bike rides
- Sponsored comedy nights and quiz nights
